Eco-benign Baggage Tags

Every air traveller has picked them off their baggage, the tags that are looped around the handle to ensure that your baggage gets to the right destination. KLM is replacing these tags with a new, cost-saving, eco-benign alternative. The current baggage tag used in Amsterdam consists of three layers: the front (reinforced, thermally-imprintable paper), a special laminate, and the backing. The new tag has a thinner backing made of unbleached paper, reducing impact on the environment and cutting costs.

Practical and Eco-benign

How exactly does this work? The new baggage tag is more eco-benign because the thinner backing layer ensures that less paper is used. It is easier to attach, which makes the tag more efficient to use. There are now 250 tags to a roll, instead of the previous 210 tags, which means the roll only has to be replaced four times, instead of five, for every 1,000 pieces of baggage.

Conscientious Staff

Thanks to our conscientious staff, who look beyond the boundaries of their workplace, KLM is able to implement ideas that contribute to cost-saving and improved sustainability. Another recent example of a highly successful idea is the “Plastic Repair Shop” at our Engineering & Maintenance department, which inspects and repairs plastic aircraft components and gives them a second life, whereas in the past they were immediately discarded and replaced.
